There are a large number of churches in the town which are still in existence
And are still using their original buildings. Most of the usual denominations
are represented and 5 of the town’s churches were built in the 1850s as the
town expanded due to the railway.
Chippenham now has the County Record Office (The Wiltshire & Swindon History
Centre) 5 minutes’ walk from the railway station. See more details on the Wiltshire
OPC website - Chippenham pages. There is also a Museum & Heritage Centre
in the Market Place run by the Town Council with plenty of information about the
town’s history and its links with King Alfred as well as its more modern history.
